Interior Minister Salazar said today that “there will be no going back” in the application of the rule that makes it compulsory for motorcyclists in the country to wear safety vest and helmets that record the number of their respective vehicles.
Although a group of motorcyclists expressed their rejection to the measure yesterday with a seedling in the Field of Mars, Salazar insisted on pointing out that this norm – that will take effect in next May – is public interest and of great importance in the fight against the delinquency. “This rule is going to continue to spread because it is of public interest for citizen security in the face of the events that have been taking place on motorcycles, such as assaults on people, wallets, checkers and even murders,” he said.
Noting that the measure constitutes an important security mechanism to be applied the country, the holder of the Interior stated that bearing the number of plaque inscribed on the helmet and vest has given good results in other countries in the region. “In Colombia, for example, everyone has accepted it because it is an issue of interest to all citizens,” he said, indicating that he hopes to be able to meet soon with representatives of motorcycle drivers to explain all the benefits of this mandatory.
What does the standard say?
Motorcyclists who as of May, do not list the unit’s running plate and a reflective tape on their helmet or vest, will be fined.
