The tape does not help you

The best for your safety would be if the reflective elements were copying your front and back outline. But who would want to go out of the pub or evening out in a reflective vest

“We place the reflective tape in the direction of the road, the right side of the body, on the ankle or on the wrist,” explains Martin Farad.

However, if only one tape is available, it is better to place it on your ankle. “The light of the car shine from the bottom and illuminate the tape on the ankle before the wrist,” notes the head of the BESIP. If you have a reflex tape attached to your wrist, be careful not to cover it with your sleeve.

If you feel as good as a reflective tape like a lighted mobile phone, remember that not only do you fail to comply with the statutory duty, but you risk the phone will run out and the driver will not see you.

Conversely, if you would like to underline the effect of reflection, you can shine with fluorescent colors in the shade or rain. It does not provide the reflection of the light, but it will prolong the distance the driver sees you.

Every extra meter decides

It would seem like a cumbersome recalculation of every inch. It is a necessary malignancy. Every additional meter available to the driver to brake or safely avoiding is calculated on the unlit road.

So, know that a pedestrian with visible reflective safety vests will record the driver at a distance of 200 meters. At 65 kilometers per hour, he has enough time to figure out the potential danger, decides what to do, maneuver, and comfortably completes.

In dark clothing, the distance you see on the side is shrunk to just 18 meters. At the same speed, the car is blinking in one second. “The driver has virtually no chance to react to the pedestrian and avoid him safely,” emphasizes Martin Farrar.

And we still talk about speed that only a few people get outside the village. At a speed of 90 kilometers per hour, a chauffeur needs a safe walking distance of at least 90 meters, and even in the white cloth that is the best reflex after that, you can only see it at a distance of 55 meters.

Compulsory reflective vests in Ireland

At the beginning of 2014 in Ireland, there will be a regulation that obliges all motorcyclists to ride in a reflective vest both during the day and at night.

In France, it ended with nationwide protests, in which other road users joined. The government withdrew from the idea, offering instead compulsory wearing by the motorcyclists’ reflective wristbands. Now the Irish authorities have made it clear – all motorcyclists will have to wear reflective vests, regardless of their attitude to this piece of clothing. According to the authors of the bill for obliging users of two-wheelers to take care of their own visibility, it aims to reduce the number of fatal accidents involving motorcyclists. Unfortunately, as usual in the case of regulations created by bureaucrats, two facts were not taken into account: the first is the material of which the vests are made – artificial fibers block the airflow and can cause overheating. The second is motorcycle clothing, which is increasingly equipped by the manufacturer with large reflective elements, sometimes covering most of the surface of the body of the rider. So what is the point of putting a vest on a reflective jacket?

Sentences among the interested are divided – some believe that the vest will actually help to see and identify… the goal they are for some drivers. Others argue that not having a hi vis vest will be another pretext to punish their mandates. Once again, a situation is created in which the citizen is to the law and not the right of the citizen. And it’s hard to resist the impression that the issue of compulsory visibility of a motorcyclist is slowly, but inevitably heading in our direction…

PPE connected to improve construction site safety

Reflective vest equipped with sensors, glass with integrated camera, relocated safety shoes… Industrialists work together to develop a set of connected equipment to improve the safety of operators and the ergonomics of working in the field. Zoom.

The Ideas Laboratory partners in Grenoble, including Bourges Construction, Suez, Air Liquid and CEA’s technical research department, have jointly designed the various elements of a connected work wear(especially sewn-in reflective fabric), designed for operators on construction sites. It includes a “connected sleeve” (which looks like the PIP-Boy video game Fallout), a kind of individual terminal worn on the forearm that guides and information workers in real time in the field. Compatible with wearing gloves, it ensures communication and optimizes the efficiency of workers, whatever the weather conditions. According to its designers, it “will thus improve working conditions”, whether it is an industrial production site, a construction site, or a waste treatment unit. It has already been the subject of a conclusive pilot phase and it is already planned that a gradual deployment will be carried out in several regions of France.

Other equipment should be developed, including a high visibility vest equipped with sensors to analyze the quality of the air breathed by the operator and equipped with LEDs displaying the dangers, protective glasses incorporating a camera in the manner of Google Glass as well as warning pictograms on the periphery of the field of vision, or relocated boots to better identify themselves on a site under construction. Partners need to work in a collaborative mode, capitalize “on their knowledge and expertise of the industry sector” and rely on new technologies, including “robotic”, this emerging branch of robotics that aims to assist humans. The connected EPI project is part of the company’s prevention plan aimed at improving safety, but also in the very evolution of business lines with the increasing contribution of digital technology. The worker of the future will be increased.

Reflective vest secures the way to school

“I have a wonderful job, she brings me a lot of nice contacts, and besides, she makes very sense,” Iris Maas speaks of her student pilot age in the Alps. Every Wednesday and Thursday morning, she is at the street with wearing a reflective vest – intersection from 7.30 am to 8 pm and guides the primary school students safely across the street. On the other three days, two more volunteers are on duty. Since October 2016, she does this volunteer service, but in March, she works again and therefore has to give up this commitment. She has been desperately looking for a successor since Christmas – so far without success.

“I know that many mothers work and therefore does not report, but I think of a senior citizen who does not need to work anymore,” she explains. In addition, she makes it equally tasty: “It’s not just obligation, you get so much back from the children. They are friendly, they talk to them, they give their trust, and I can help them too. That is a nice feeling! “Yes, sometimes it’s about more than just looking for the traffic gap to bring the children safely over and motivate motorists to stop. You also have to settle some quarrels between the children, who maybe got up first with their left foot. Alternatively, encourage to go to school at all, when a child tells of his difficulties with a teacher.

“There was a great deal of excitement when two girls discovered a free-range chicken at the ice cream parlor. They wanted to save it so that it would not be run over by the car. They were only able to calm down when a father and I reached someone at the public registry office of the community who took care of the lost animal, “says Iris Maas, describing special events connecting school pilot and children.

The main task, of course, is that of the “traffic helper,” as it is officially read on the reflective vest with the reflective stripes. Iris Maas is also recognizable in the twilight (in winter in the dark) by the drivers – often in contrast to the children, who are dressed dark. It is not allowed to intervene in traffic. “It sometimes itches in my fingers, when I see how the old people are struggling to get over the lime tree avenue. Because here there is often a lot of traffic in the morning, the working people are on the road and trucks bring the delivery to the shops. This is often very confusing for pedestrians and they do not dare to cross the street,” is the observation of Iris Maas.

Elementary school principal Ulla Lederman in safety clothing confirms: “The corner is mean in the morning. I would also be more comfortable, if someone would find who takes over the pupil pilot service of Mrs. Maas from March. This week, the parents will receive a letter in which this appeal will be published again. “

Children go to school with safety vest in the dark season

Children should not go to school without a safety vest in the dark season – as the members of the organizing partnership in Gelsenkirchen point out.

Children should not go to school without a safety vest in the dark season – as the members of the organizing partnership in Gelsenkirchen point out. In November, the traffic guard, the police, and the city in front of the Gelsenkirchen primary schools counted. Result: Just 15 percent of all students had reflective vest. Especially the parents are in the duty, say the experts. Without a safety vest, children are difficult to recognize in traffic.

Policemen call for caution and adherence to safe driving rules

Changing road conditions, quickly falling in the dark, fogs, snowfalls, slippery and wet surfaces significantly hinder driving. Remember that excessive speed and rapid maneuvers can contribute to the loss of control of the vehicle and, consequently, to collisions and accidents. Police officers in safety vest call for caution and compliance with the rules and rules of safe driving.

Deteriorating road conditions require more caution and increased concentration from drivers. In connection with rain or snow, roadways can be slippery, and in such situations, the wheels easily lose their grip. Remember that in many different places the road surface combined with rainfall, extends the braking distance of the vehicle, in extreme cases the driver may slip and not control the car. Overtaking in such conditions, passing, cornering can be very dangerous. Drivers should remember to navigate the road with lights on and observe the speed limits, and when weather conditions are worse, to slow down according to the principle that slower means safer. We appeal not to charge, think, or anticipate threats.

Let us be very careful on the road, especially after dark. Pedestrians are unprotected road users who, when adverse weather conditions become less visible to drivers.

A special appeal is also directed to pedestrians not to go directly in front of an oncoming vehicle. Even at the pedestrian crossing, you must first make sure that the driver will manage to slow down. Of course, the pedestrian takes precedence over the passage, but here the principle of limited trust is most applicable. Every pedestrian should also remember about his safety and take care to be visible. A reflective vest, key chain, headband, or even a flashlight will make it easier to see the oncoming driver when moving on a poorly lit road.

You should pay special attention to the depressions of the terrain, on hills, near forests and water reservoirs – the road can be particularly slippery there. Exercise extreme caution near pedestrian crossings. Also, be careful when commuting to them. If the pedestrian enters the passage, the driver may not slow down. In these conditions, the visibility drops and the braking distance is significantly longer. That is why it is so important to adjust the speed to the prevailing conditions and check the technical condition of your car. Changing tires, checking the condition of the wipers, lights and braking system should be mandatory activities that we will perform before winter. It is very important to take care of the appropriate field of view. Remember to clean the glass and mirrors of our car from ice and other dirt.

We remind you about the obligation to use reflective elements by pedestrians traveling on roads outside the built-up area – the use of reflective material improves visibility and thus safety.

Policemen persuaded pedestrians to wear reflective tapes

Police officers serving on the roads not only controlled yesterday how the pedestrians care about their safety on the road, but also gave the inhabitants reflective material. All this is as part of the “Keep an example on the road” action.

The aim of the police action was to promote the use of reflective elements by pedestrians moving not only outside the built-up area, but outside also where it is not required. It turns out that often accidents involving pedestrians also occur in the city. In many situations, they are invisible to drivers.

Yesterday, the police officers from the Citrusy unit controlled places of increased pedestrian traffic and checked whether the residents were complying with the rules according to which they should ensure that they were visible along the road. Pedestrians moving after dark outside the built-up area should wear a reflective clothing in a visible way for other road users.

During the action, police officers made pedestrians aware that this is not only a requirement of law, but also common sense, and the pedestrian-worn reflex is an expression of conscious, responsible participation in road traffic.

During the inspection, the officers handed out pedestrian reflective vest prepared specially for the occasion. The idea is to reach as many people as possible, so the subject of pedestrian safety is discussed during meetings with residents in various places in the podia. Police officers remind to see – it is not the same as being visible.

Motorcyclists must wear a reflective vest in France

In France, a country that is particularly keen on implementing all safety regulations, a new law will come into force on January 1, according to which every motorcyclist will have to carry his (important: carry with him) a reflective vest. The penalty for non-possession can range from 11 to 100 Euro if the motorcyclist was involved in an accident and did not have such a vest with him. Interestingly, the law does not prescribe to ride in such a vest, but only to have it with you. Does this have nothing to do with security, but only with the enforcement of the EU directive?

Another interesting fact: Putting a reflective vest with you will be acceptable, but all other reflective elements – no. Therefore, if, for example, you will have a jacket in a Yellow Fluorescent, while you are in control, but the lack of a hi vis vest in the glove compartment will give you a ticket. The rules apply not only to the French, but also to all motorcyclists. The recipe is already in force in France as far as drivers are concerned, but as of January 1, 2016, it will also include drivers of two-wheelers.

The figure in a reflective vest can be seen at night

For some time, mysterious characters can be found on the main roads in the Karenna commune. They look like real people from a distance. Being closer, we notice that these are only wire-shaped silhouettes that have been put on real reflective clothes. Residents wonder that they are metal pedestrians.”

We managed to find three places where wire people were set up. They stand by the road leading from Karenna to the village in Niece, and at the stadium in Korea. Perhaps there are more. If you met them at other points, let us know or send a photograph.

In none of these places, the men are not lonely. They always appear in pairs. One is wearing reflective clothing; the other is wearing a dark blouse or T-shirt.

It is not difficult to guess the goal that guided the inventors of the mission of the mysterious characters. We guess that they are to get drivers to take their feet off the gas and give them food for thought… It is enough to pay attention to their clothes. Both men are quite visible during the day. At night, however, the situation changes dramatically. From a distance, we can see the figure in a reflective vest, while the second one can be noticed only from a close distance.

Who “sent” the wire people to the side of the Root Road? Whenever we solve the puzzle – we will let you know!
